DOG GONE IT....should dogs be leashed or unleashed on the Quay Promenade?

Summer is coming and so are the dogs.  With Winter starting to give way to the warm breezes and floral bulbs of Spring, the profileration of the dog population is about to explode on the the Boardwalk.

Some residents are concerned that dog owners will ignore the 'leash-always' rule imposed by the City.  The Quayside Community Board (QCB) is extremely pro-dog but recognizes that this incredible walk-way is to be shared and enjoyed by everyone ...including those that are intimidated, frighten or simply do not like dogs.

Do you think the QCB should continue its vigilance and inform owners of the rules through the website and on the Boardwalk?  Will you tell the 'unleashed' to leash-up when you see them?  What do you think we can do to get the message across in a nice way?

  1. The recent unfortunate possible poisoning of an off-leash dog up at Queens Park should serve as a warning to all dog owners of the necessity of keeping your dogs on leash - except at the two off-leash dog play areas in and near our community. Not only does this protect people and other dogs, but it also protects the dog! Off-leash dogs can ingest "food" not good for them when not controlled. As well, the owner could miss the remnants of their dog "doing their business" and put the health of children at risk and despoil the Esplande area. We don't want a poor animal sickened or killed down here as the result of the negligence of its owner. Let's hope we can avoid the kind of vigilante action down here that may have been "un-leashed" by irresponsible dog owners up in Queens Park. A reminder that a dog trailing a leash "not under control" of its owner is subject to the same Animal Control By-law fines. As a final note I want to thank all dog owners who are observing the signs at the Children's submarine park to keep their dogs out of that area in order to provide a safe and healthy environment for our children. The Children's Park is for Children and the Dog Park is for Dogs. LOL

  2. I have to admit I don't as much mind well mannered dogs off their leash as I do finding a pile of crap on the boardwalk. Not on the grass - on the boardwalk! What is wrong with these dog owners. But that said , it is hard to know what dogs are mindfull and those that are not. It actually seems the meaner the dog and the more disobedient they are - the SMALLER they are. What is up with that ?
